Based in Johannesburg, we are South Africa’s biggest government centre for treating adult cystic fibrosis.
The unit specialises in pulmonology and CF is a small, but vital part of that unit. As of the 1st of January 2008, the unit also started dealing with non-contagious infectious diseases.
CMJAH adult cystic fibrosis centre offers a comprehensive programme for the treatment of the adult CF patients in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is the largest in the country!
The centre puts a lot of emphasis on independence and the involvement of the patient in their own treatment. For many years we have worked with the belief that one lives with CF but does not let CF dictate your life. For this reason we stress education of the CF patient on their condition to allow them to make informed decisions and play an active role in their health.
At present we have over 70 patients on the programme. The patients range from 16 years of age to 50 years of age. Because we are an adult unit we unfortunately cannot accommodate people under the age of 16.
The centre offers both clinic and inpatient (ward) facilities which are interlinked to allow both the staff and the patient to get to know each other prior to any admissions which may be necessary as part of your treatment.
We run two clinics a week. Dr Cathy Baird runs the Wednesday clinic. Dr Lindie Gouws alternate the Monday clinics between them.
Cathy sees the inpatients on a Wednesday and Lindie sees the inpatients on a Tuesday. The unit respiratory doctors along with the respiratory consultant, see the inpatients on a daily basis.
